Curriculum


The goals of the curriculum include


a. Providing instruction and training in the English language
b. Familiarizing international students with the educational methods of higher education institutions in the United States.

Course Description

Full-time students in the Intensive English Program attend classes for a minimum of 21 hours per week. During the fall and spring semesters, students follow the regular university calendar and schedule of Monday / Wednesday / Friday classes of 50 minutes or 1 hour and 50 minutes each and Tuesday / Thursday classes of 75 minutes each.

Placement & Testing


To ensure placement of students at the appropriate level of the program, new students take two tests:

1.Institutional TOEFL
2.Michigan Placement Test

New students will be placed according to their test scores.

TOEFL Requirements for Entering West Virginia University

Students entering West Virginia University directly from their home countries must have a score of 550 on the TOEFL.  However, students who have been enrolled in the IEP for at least one semester as full-time students can be admitted with the following scores: 

Undergraduate Students must have a 500 (173 Computer/international) TOEFL score with an overall GPA of 2.75 and good recommendations from the IEP, or a 550 TOEFL score.

Graduate Students must have a 530 (197 Computer/International) TOEFL score with an overall GPA of 3.0 and good recommendations from the IEP, or a 550 TOEFL score.

Note: A few university departments require a score higher than 550 to meet requirments.
