Does this program offer face-to-face or online courses?

This program is offered online only. The AMP ESL PREP program of courses allows students who wish to improve their ESL skills to meet university entrance requirements an opportunity to study from home. AMP ESL PREP courses are the perfect choice for those who are not yet ready to study abroad at WVU.

Do applicants need language test scores to register and enroll in AMP ESL PREP courses?

TOEFL or IELTS test scores are not required for admission to the AMP ESL Prep program. Students registered for the program are required to take the placement exam during the ELLI New Student Orientation.  Prospective students who do not meet the placement score requirements for AMP ESL PREP may elect to attend regular face-to-face IEP courses after taking the placement test.

What placement testing is required?

Prospective AMP ESL PREP applicants must take the ESL Placement Test before they will be able to register for program classes. The Placement Test sign up dates will be announced each semester. Check the dates on the Placement Testing page.

What is the total cost?

Will this program give a study visa?

No, the AMP ESL PREP course of study is online only. Prospective students may study in their home countries and do not need a visa to enroll in AMP ESL PREP courses.

Can an AMP ESL PREP student be a part-time student?

Yes, AMP ESL PREP students can enroll in several courses or the full program of courses each semester.

Can someone enroll in AMP ESL and study from their home country?

Prospective students who wish to improve their ESL skills while remaining in their home countries may choose to study in the AMP ESL PREP program. AMP ESL PREP courses do not count toward a degree study program. AMP ESL PREP does not allow for a direct path to AMP ESL. Students wishing to enroll in AMP ESL after the AMP ESL PREP courses will need to provide the appropriate English language test scores.

Who will advise prospective and current AMP ESL PREP students?

AMP ESL PREP students will receive specialized advising for program planning and course registrations by the specially trained AMP ESL Student Program Advisor during the enrollment process and while studying in the AMP ESL PREP program. The AMP ESL PREP Student advisor will assist students with tasks related to the program and progression through the program.

Will AMP ESL PREP students receive academic support for ESL courses?

AMP ESL PREP students will receive support through a variety of resources such as Language Support Center Tutoring, Writing Lab and Study Hall, among others.

Will there be extracurricular activities or events for AMP ESL PREP students?

The English Language Learning Institute hosts many extracurricular activities and cultural events for IEP, AMP ESL PREP and AMP ESL students each semester. AMP ESL PREP students will have a variety of weekly activities and other events scheduled online through the semester in which they may practice their language skills and connect with the online community.

How do students move from the AMP ESL PREP program to full enrollment in credit-earning degree courses at WVU?

Students who successfully complete the AMP ESL PREP program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher will also need English Language test scores to be able to apply to the AMP ESL Path 2 program the next semester. Then, AMP ESL Path 2 students who complete AMP ESL Path 2 courses with a GPA of 2.25 or higher may apply to the AMP ESL Path 1 program the next semester. Finally, AMP ESL Path 1 students who complete AMP ESL Path 1 courses with a GPA of 2.25 or higher may enroll in WVU courses particular to their majors the following semester, contingent on meeting the admission requirements for their program. AMP ESL students must meet all other prerequisites for their degree program before being admitted into that major.
