Accelerated Mountaineer Program for ESL

NOW OPEN: Enrollment for ALL International Students beginning Fall 2023

Launched in fall 2021, the Accelerated Mountaineer Program for English as a Second Language helps to make integration and transition to college life for international students as easy as possible with experienced instructors who provide linguistic and cultural guidance.

AMP ESL is an accelerated program, either one or two semesters in length, depending on initial test scores. Student support is an important factor in both AMP ESL paths. Additional student support is available outside of regular class time.

To determine which path fits you best, review our Program Requirements. You can also review the Flexible AMP ESL Curriculum.

International students at WVU seeking extra training in English as a Second Language may now enroll in any of the AMP-ESL courses.  Check with your advisor today!

Find Your AMP ESL Path

One term of major courses and ESL support courses

For the one-semester path, students will fully matriculate into major courses after successful completion of one semester of ESL support classes. This path is for those students who need minimal assistance meeting English language standards.

  • Begin taking all major courses after one semester of ESL support.
  • All courses earn credit that may count toward your degree.
  • Culture, language and academic topics are combined.

Two-Semester Path

Two terms of major courses and ESL support courses

For those students who require a more immersive English language experience, the two-semester path provides more opportunities for English language development, cultural studies and acclimation to U.S. higher education academic environments.

  • Begin taking all major courses after two semesters of ESL support.
  • All courses earn credit that may count toward your degree.
  • The curriculum combines language, culture and area studies with more opportunities for not only English language, but also academic skills development.
